Evgen Bavcar, the Blind Photographer

It’s amazing sometimes, the amount of skill and versatility displayed by the visually challenged. Especially when they’re able to do certain things better than those with perfect vision. Photography, for instance.
If you’re wondering how it could ever be possible that a blind man take photographs, Evgen Bavcar has gone and done just that. In fact, he is a noted photographer, with his works being published and exhibited around the world. Bavcar, who was born in a small Slovenian town near Venice in 1946, met with two consecutive accidents that completely robbed him of his sight. This, before he even reached the age of twelve. Around four years after this incident, he happened to have access to a camera for the very first time. The first snap he ever took, was of a girl he loved. It was then that Bavcar realized that “I secretly discovered I could possess something that I could not see…”
When asked how he manages the amazing feat, he said, “I photograph what I imagine. The originals are inside my head. It is a matter of creating a mental image, the physical record which best represents the work of what is imagined,” he adds. Bavcar does admit that there are things that escape him, but says that this is true of photographers who can see as well. “My images are fragile; I’ve never seen them, but I know they exist, and some of them have touched me deeply.”
His photographs are developed on contact sheet with the help of those who “serve as mediators between the contacts and my own inner reality.”  The manner in which Bavcar describes his work itself is artistically beautiful. He is said to have put visual beauty into the context of blindness.

Jangan pernah lewatkan tempat ini jika Anda pergi ke Spanyol. Kebun ini juga disebut sebagai bentuk seni lansekap. Ini adalah tempat yang sangat indah terletak di dataran tinggi. Ada Pegunungan Sierra Nevada di dekatnya. Kebun dari abad ke-13. Sebelumnya hanya dipenuhi dengan kebun-kebun dan padang rumput hijau. The Amazing Oak Chapel of Allouville Bellefosse

The French village of Allouville-Bellefosse is famous for the Chêne Chapelle (Oak Chapel), which is literally a chapel built into an oak tree. The amazing architecture consists of a wooden staircase spiraling around the ancient tree, leading up to a couple of chambers. These rooms have always been used as places of worship, by the village locals.
The age of the tree has been a subject of debate, but everyone agrees that it is the oldest tree in France, without a doubt. The tree is known to have been growing as far back as the thirteenth century, during the rule of Louis IX, when France was a truly centralized kingdom. It is also known to have survived the Hundred Years War against the English, the Black Death, the Reformation, and Napoleon’s rule. Local folklore dates it a 1,000 years old, when it is said that the acorn took root. However, tree experts say it could only be around 800 years old, which means the thirteenth century saw it’s origins.

The oak has seen its share of tough times. In the late 1600s, when it was around 500 years old, it was struck by lightning one stormy night. The bolt that struck the tree is estimated to have been around 30,000 °C, yet, the old tree firmly held ground, giving people the opportunity to witness a miracle. Although a hollow was burned right into the center of the tree, new branches and leaves continued to grow and acorns would be produced abundantly. In view of the miracle that had occurred, the tree was pegged as a sort of holy spot, deserving of a pilgrimage. The staircase and chapel were built soon after. The hollow in the tree was devoted to the Virgin Mary, and local Christians pay it a visit every year, on the 15th of August.

The tree makes for a very pretty sight, but of course, it is aging. Poles have now been installed to help keep the tree upright, and wooden shingles have been added to places where the bark is lost. The old oak is treated as a national heritage and is being preserved pretty well. A must-see place, if you happen to be in that region of France.

The Miniature World of the Holiday Train Show, in New York

The New York Botanical Garden has put up a new  Holiday Train Show, which has been attracting several visitors. Held in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the show isn’t very far from the entrance to the garden. The display does feature some trains, but the real attractions are the models of famous buildings made entirely from plants.
The miniature trains weave around the lush plants and flowers, and replicas of the Empire State Building, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, TWA Terminal at JFK and a few other buildings that are made entirely of plant parts. What’s special about these models is that they aren’t exact replicas of the structures themselves. Rather, artists have tried to capture the defining characteristics of these buildings. Creator Paul Busse, along with his team of artists gathers the material from woodlands around their studio situated in Kentucky, making an effort not to disturb the natural environment. The 100% natural models are created from plant material, with acorn chimney tops and magnolia leaf roofs. The reproduction of Washington Irving’s home has pink orchids surrounding it, one of the branches wrapped like a vine around the entrance. Small plants and flowers are used to depict trees and bushes on a perfectly manicured front lawn.

Some of the visitor favorites, according to the Director of Exhibitions at the New York Botanical Garden,  Karen Daubmann, are the reproduction of the Penn Station and the now demolished Yankee Stadium. The roof of the JFK’s Trans World Airlines Flight Center is interestingly made from a huge, browning tin roof tree leaf. The huge leaf is definitely a sight to behold. The Holiday Train Show is on view until January 16, 2012. Tickets need to be purchased in advance if you would like to get a time slot of your choice; each viewing is timed at 15-minute intervals.

Seniman Ini Membuat Spesies Unik Hasil Gabungan Beberapa Hewan Mati (foto)

Enrique Gomez De Molina adalah seorang seniman dari Miami yang menciptakan patung-patung aneh, dengan bagian-bagian boneka hewan mati. Sementara taksidermi sendiri bukanlah sesuatu yang baru, apa De Molina dilakukan adalah dia campuran bagian-bagian dari binatang yang berbeda untuk membuat yang baru, spesies baru semua bersama-sama. Hasilnya adalah apa yang beberapa sebut seni, dan lain-lain dapat menemukan biasa mengganggu. 

Enrique Gomez De Molina is an artist from Miami who creates bizarre sculptures, with the stuffed parts of dead animals. While taxidermy itself isn’t something new, what De Molina does is he mixes up parts from different animals to create a new one, a new species all together. The result is what some might call art, and others may find plain disturbing.
For instance, one of the strange beings created by De Molina is a combination of a squirrel and a crab. The head of a squirrel and the body of the crab. Another one has the heads of two swans placed on the body of a goat. The art is all fine, but the artist himself is facing the possibility of landing in jail for no less than 5 years. He may also have to cough up $250,000 in fines. The reason – he illegally imported the body parts of endangered species, a crime that he has pleaded guilty to. He was arrested in November.

According to the police, De Molina did not obtain the permit required to import animal parts, skins and other remains. He apparently was aware that his actions were illegal. However, he went ahead and smuggled in parts are remains of cobras, hornbills, pangolins, etc. from all over the world. He asked people to wrap them in carbon paper while bringing them in. He is also charged with being in the possession of the skins of Java Kingfisher, birds of paradise and collared kingfishers.
While these sculptures might look disturbing and even seem like cruelty against animals, De Molina says that his aim is to raise awareness regarding the danger faced by a range of species. He wanted to depict the dangers of genetic engineering and human intervention. Meanwhile, he offers his pieces for sale on the internet and through exhibitions. The prices go up to $80,000. His work was recently put up at the Scope Art Fair in Miami. Two pieces were sold for a total of $100,000.
